CLASSIC CHESS SETS (7)

The classic tournament chess sets, which includes the pieces and the board, are an essential for anyone who wants to take their chess playing to the next level through professional play. Tournament sets are the professional wooden chess sets in our range. The pieces are from solid hornbeam, classically Staunton in design, additional weighting added to their bases and beautifully hand carved and hand turned. They are polished using only natural waxes and also have the felt pads on the bottom. Beautifully complimented by the tournament specification mahogany and sycamore wood folding chess board. These chess sets have an insert tray for the chess pieces storage inside. The sets are only available in the colour brown.

What Makes a Set a “Classic Tournament” Set?
In 1948 the foundation of the World Chess Federation created a new era for chess tournaments. The World Chess Federation was responsible for developing international standard rules and regulations, which included regulating the types of sets that could be used in tournaments. These regulations continue to be in place today and are considered standard for professional players.

What makes a chess set a “tournament set” is the fact that it abides by World Chess Federation regulations. Tournament chess sets have specific regulations that must be followed. The most notable regulations to keep in mind for tournament play are the size of the chess squares and the size of the king. These two regulations set the tone for the rest of the board, as they indicate the general size of the board as well as the proportional height of the rest of the chess pieces.

Chessboards are hand-decorated with a technique called INTARSIA – that is an old form of wood inlaying, start of that technique dates before the seventh century. Thanks to this method, chess has a unique appearance and smooth board surface.

If you are interested in professional play, then a tournament board is a must for your chess collection. Most tournament pieces are weighted and feature a felt bottom for more stable and easier play.
The standard USCF tournament set has 5,70 cm squares and a king’s height of 9,5 cm. Please note that standards for boards and sets can differ slightly from country to country.
